Better Jobs Ontario (previously known as Second Career)
Better Jobs Ontario is a government initiative. This program is designed to assist laid-off workers in the province by offering skills training and financial support. The program aims to help these individuals acquire the necessary skills and qualifications to secure employment in high-demand occupations within Ontario.
How does it work?
Eligible applicants can receive financial help with books, tuition fees, transportation, basic living allowance, and other expenses related to their education.
The Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU) offers you up to $28,000 if you are eligible for the program to cover the cost of the following:
- Tuition
- Institutional costs
- Books
- Basic living allowance
- Transportation
The amount you receive depends on your individual needs and the available funding.
Additional funding may be available for:
- Childcare
- Living away from home
- Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) and/or language training
- Disability-related supports
The educational course must not exceed two years in duration and should lead to a career path. Besides, it should also allow the students to follow a year of academic upgrading if needed.
Who is eligible for Better Jobs Ontario?
You must meet the following criteria to be eligible for Better Jobs Ontario:
- Have experienced a lay-off and are currently without employment
- Come from low-income households and are facing challenges in connecting with the job market
- A Canadian citizen or permanent resident or a convention refugee claimant who fulfills the requirements
- A resident of Ontario
- Demonstrate that there is a demand for the occupation you seek training in within the labour market.

Eligibility Criteria for Participants
To be eligible for the funding via Abilities to Work, you must meet the following criteria:
- Minimum age requirement: 15 years and older
- Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
- Legal entitlement to work in Canada
- Not received Employment Insurance (EI) in the past 3-5 years (Work Readiness Program) or no specific EI conditions (Employment Ontario program)
- Flexibility in terms of campus location or delivery, class times, and days of the week
- Willingness to work in competitive employment
Funding Amount
We are pleased to offer funding opportunities to support your educational journey. Eligible students have the potential to receive up to $3750.00 to assist with their tuition expenses. The funding amount is determined based on your eligibility and the suitability of program requirements. We understand the importance of having the necessary resources, and that's why the funding may also cover expenses such as books, uniforms, as well as First Aid and CPR training. Our goal is to ensure that you have the financial support needed to succeed in your chosen program and excel in your academic pursuits.

Achēv actively facilitates the provision of financial loans to Internationally Trained Individuals, enabling them to kick-start their careers in Canada, in partnership with Meridian Credit Union. This program is funded by the Government of Canada's Foreign Credential Recognition Program empowering eligible students at Peel College of Professional Studies by assisting them with their education and training expenses. Through this collaboration, Achēv and Meridian Credit Union actively work together to ensure that individuals have access to the necessary financial resources to pursue their education and establish themselves in their desired career paths within Canada.
